The space is the limit Gottfried Schenker: Congratulations, Mr. Thewes – my excursion into the future was worthwhile, just looking at the figures: the 150th anniversary year is the most successful in Schenker’s entire history! Jochen Thewes: And that’s after two years of living in a global pandemic. You laid a solid foundation in 1872 and taught us how to adapt to new challenges. GS: And this positive trend will continue! Being a curious person, I have already traveled to the 200th anniversary year. JT: I can certainly understand that – we always have to think ahead. Can you tell me a few things about the year 2072? GS: But of course – just between us. So, on Earth, in the future, goods will be transported at the speed of sound. JT: So, the hyperloop concept became reality? Outstanding. That must have been fascinating for you to witness, wasn’t it? GS: You mean because the basic idea dates back to the 19th century? JT: Exactly. I mean, the hyperloop is basically a train racing through a vacuum tube. That’s something that could have been imagined in your lifetime, but not implemented. What does it look like in the future? GS: Let’s focus on Germany for a moment. In Hamburg, there is the HyperPort, a station for the hyperloop. For a while, loading took longer than the entire trip to Munich. But we have found a solution for that, too. The train now covers 800 kilo- meters in three-quarters of an hour. JT: Fantastic! That sounds great, but I can see from your face that that’s far from all that’s going to change for us. Is that right? GS: Exactly. “Space logistics” is the magic phrase here. My, if I had had these opportunities back in my day! I was limited to railroads and ships, and the – JT: You’re getting off topic, Mr. Schenker! GS: Oh, right. So, DB Schenker will transport satellites into space and work with cargo rocket fleets. Instead of “the sky is the limit,” it’s now “the space is the limit.” 144 143 142 145 Freight at the speed of sound Since 2013, various companies have been working on hyperloops that can go 1,000 km/h. Science fiction becomes reality DB Schenker is part of a new movement: the NewSpace initiative, the aim of which is to promote space applications. Return on innovation Satellite transport can become a lucrative new business field. First test routes In the U.S. state of Nevada, in France and in the Netherlands, there are vacuum tubes for the first hyperloop tests. Clean transport The hyperloop would be the fastest transportation system and would also consume the least energy – with extremely low CO2 emissions. Connect 4.0 In the future, this booking platform will make booking freight as easy as online shopping on Amazon. “Parcel boxes on the moon or satellite transport on Earth: In the future, DB Schenker is taking on a leading role in the area of space logistics as well.” (Gottfried Schenker) “ Space logistics is an emerging niche with enormous potential.
