Since April 2024, DB SCHENKER has been the first logistics service provider to deploy a hydrogen-powered truck in the Passau region.
Turning point, transformation, or climate change—the logistics industry is facing major challenges. For years, DB SCHENKER has been working to make its transport operations more sustainable. This includes the introduction of new low-emission or Scope 1 emission-free truck drives, such as those being tested in Passau, Germany.
“We are curious about the future and want to know what works for us.”
Thomas Roll, Deputy Operations Manager in Passau
Since April 2024, DB SCHENKER has been the first logistics service provider to deploy a hydrogen-powered truck in the Passau region. The vehicle is a Mercedes Atego equipped with an 80 kW fuel cell and can transport up to seven tons of freight. The truck is expected to deliver 280 tons of goods per day within the region and handle a total of 3,300 consignments. The H2 truck provides valuable and sustainable support.
Around 30 Tons Less CO2
The aim of the project is to create sustainable logistics and reduce CO2 emissions. The use of certified green hydrogen produced from renewable energy makes this possible. If the vehicle operates 220 days a year, transporting seven tons of freight over 225 kilometers, emissions will be reduced by around 30 tons of CO2 per year. “We can easily save that,” says Thomas Roll.
According to the manufacturer, the hydrogen truck has a range of 450 kilometers. This is essential for sustainable driving, as frequent recharging of batteries in electric vehicles or too small hydrogen tanks can lead to inefficiencies for both the vehicle and the driver. The truck’s highly efficient fuel consumption means that refueling with hydrogen every two days is generally sufficient.
Valuable Experience
DB SCHENKER has already tested and implemented various types of power units in the past, including several electric trucks, hydrogen trucks and trucks powered by HVO100 biofuel. Whether for trade fair logistics or contract logistics, these vehicles are used across the various business units of DB SCHENKER.
